On the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, Bishop Thomas Graham Rose offered a reflection on the theme of true light versus false light, drawing from Scripture, Church tradition, and current society.
Reflecting on the Gospel account of the Transfiguration, Bishop Rose spoke about the influence of false light in the world, including technological manipulation, artificial intelligence, social media misinformation, and moral relativism. Referencing 2 Corinthians, Ephesians 6, and the prophet Zechariah, he said the crisis is spiritual.
The Local Ordinary of Dundee Diocese said, “We don’t just need a new Benedict. We need a new John the Baptist — someone to prepare the way of the Lord in a world darkened by illusions of light.”
Recalling St. Paul’s conversion, the Transfiguration, and the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, Bishop Rose urged those in formation and ministry to be alert, discerning, and centered in Christ, the light who does not deceive.
The Mass took place at St John Vianney Seminary in Pretoria Archdiocese, and was attended by rectors, formators, as well as seminarians, along with staff members from Khanya House, the headquarters of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC).
