6 Nov, 2026

The Apostolic Nuncio to Southern Africa has paid tribute to Cardinal Wilfrid Fox Napier OFM, the first indigenous Bishop of Kokstad, recognising his enduring contribution to the Church in South Africa and the universal Church.

In a congratulatory video message ahead of the celebration on 8 November 2026 at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Kokstad Diocese, Archbishop Henryk M. Jagodziński highlighted five significant milestones in the Cardinal’s life: his 85th birthday, the 65th anniversary of his profession to the Order of Friars Minor (OFM) Franciscans, the 56th anniversary of his priestly ordination, the 45th anniversary of his episcopal ordination and the 25th anniversary of his elevation to the College of Cardinals.

A life that helped shape Church history

In the Friday, 6 November 2026 video message, Archbishop Jagodziński expressed gratitude for Cardinal Napier’s years of service, describing him as a man deeply committed not only to the Church in South Africa but also to its universal mission.

He acknowledged the Cardinal’s contribution to the life of the Church through his membership of the College of Cardinals and his participation in the wider leadership and mission of the Catholic Church.

“You take part in the history of the universal Church and the Church in South Africa, but you have also created this history,” the Apostolic Nuncio said.

He further recognised the many dimensions of the Cardinal’s ministry, including contributions recorded in publications and historical accounts, as well as countless acts of service known only to God.

Archbishop Jagodziński prayed that Christ, who had called Cardinal Napier to a lifetime of service, would continue to grant him strength, wisdom and joy, inspired by the example of St Francis of Assisi.

From Kokstad to the universal Church

Born in Matatiele, South Africa, on 8 March 1941, Cardinal Napier joined the Order of Friars Minor and was ordained a Franciscan priest on 25 July 1970.

In 1981, he was ordained Bishop of Kokstad, becoming the first indigenous bishop to lead the diocese. His appointment marked an important chapter in the history of the local Church and its leadership.

In 1992, he was appointed Archbishop of Durban, a ministry he continued until his retirement in 2021. He also served as President of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference and played a significant role in Church efforts to promote peace and dialogue during South Africa’s transition to democracy.

On 21 February 2001, Pope John Paul II elevated him to the College of Cardinals, assigning him the titular church of San Francesco d’Assisi ad Acilia. He subsequently participated as a voter in the 2005 and 2013 papal conclaves, and in the 2025 conclave as a non-voter due to age limits.

Now Archbishop Emeritus of Durban, Cardinal Napier continues to serve the Church, including as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Eshowe.

The Diocese of Kokstad has invited clergy, religious, the faithful and friends of the diocese to join in thanksgiving for the Cardinal’s vocation and contribution to the people of God. The celebration on Sunday, 8 November, will begin with Holy Mass at 10:00 at St Patrick’s Cathedral, followed by a reception.
