The Local Ordinary of the Diocese of Tzaneen joined thousands of young people at the third annual Blessed Benedict Daswa Youth & Young Adults Pilgrimage.
Held at the Ave Maria Pastoral Centre in Tzaneen, the 29 to 30 March event was organized by the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC) office overseeing youth and young adults in Botswana, Eswatini, and South Africa.
Speaking during an interview with the SACBC communication office, Bishop João Noé Rodrigues emphasized the profound message of embracing faith with dedication. His words echoed the theme of the event, Hope Does Not Disappoint, as he encouraged the youth to commit to their spiritual journey with resilience.
Traditionally held in the northern region of the diocese at the Sibasa parish, this year’s decision to host the pilgrimage in a more centralized location aimed to ensure better accessibility and facilities for participants. Despite the logistical changes, Bishop Rodrigues said he was impressed by the enthusiasm and energy of the young people present.
“This is my first time being personally involved in this pilgrimage,” he shared. “I was surprised by the great turnout and the excitement among the youth. It is an opportunity for them to see a different part of the diocese and to be reminded that as followers of Christ, they must listen to His teachings, not just pray.”
Addressing the theme of hope, Bishop Rodrigues reflected on its deeper theological meaning.
“Hope is not just about short-term desires, like passing exams or achieving personal goals. As a Christian virtue, it extends beyond this life and shapes our entire journey. That’s why we call ourselves pilgrims of hope. We carry this hope even to the final hour of our lives,” said Bishop Rodrigues during the March 29 interview.
He further urged the youth to use this Jubilee Year as an opportunity to grow spiritually and take meaningful action. “A special year like this calls us to go the extra mile—whether that means reconciling with someone, helping those in need, or deepening our personal commitment to Christ. It doesn’t have to be something big; even small acts of faith and kindness matter.”
Bishop Rodrigues reminded the youth and young adults of Botswana, Eswatini and South Africa that the “journey of faith requires humility, self-reflection, and action.”
“Let us embrace the Jubilee Year by living as true pilgrims of hope,” said Bishop Rodrigues.
