Synod of Bishops

What is Synodality?

Synodality denotes the particular style that qualifies the life and mission of the Church, expressing her nature as the People of God journeying together and gathering in assembly, summoned by the Lord Jesus in the power of the Holy Spirit to proclaim the Gospel. Synodality ought to be expressed in the Church’s ordinary way of living and working.

Synodality, in this perspective, is much more than the celebration of ecclesial meetings and Bishops’ assemblies, or a matter of simple internal administration within the Church; it is the specific modus vivendi et operandi of the Church, the People of God, which reveals and gives substance to her being as communion when all her members journey together, gather in assembly and take an active part in her evangelizing mission.

Synod of Synodality

Purpose: This Synodal Process aims to foster a long-term transformation of the Church into a more synodal community. It seeks to discern and implement steps towards proclaiming the Gospel effectively and growing as a synodal Church.

Guiding Question: How can the Church’s journey together help it proclaim the Gospel and what steps are inspired by the Spirit to become a more synodal Church?

Key Themes:

  • Communication: The Church is rooted in the Trinitarian love and unity. Through listening to God’s Word, Tradition, and the sensus fidei, all members are called to participate in discerning and living out God’s call.

  • Participation: All baptized faithful are qualified and called to serve one another. The synodal Church involves the entire community in prayer, listening, analysis, dialogue, discernment, and offering pastoral advice.

  • Mission: The Church’s mission is to witness to God’s love. This Synodal Process seeks to enable the Church to better witness to the Gospel, especially among those on the margins of society.
