Sr. Hermenegild Makoro CPS is a South African Nun in the congregation of Precious Blood Sisters. She was born in December 7, 1951 in the district of Mount Fletcher in Eastern Cape Province. She is the second of four children and the only girl among them.
She is currently serving as the Secretary-General of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC) since 2012.
Since 1976, Sr. Makoro has been a member of the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood in the Diocese of Mthatha. Since she joined Precious Blood Sisters she has served in various roles, including being a teacher at Mariazell High School, a Coordinator of the Diocesan Catechetical Team, a Coordinator of Diocese Leadership training, and she also served as the Provincial Superior of the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood.
Sr Makoro acquired a Bachelor of Degree in Theology from the University of Natal and a Bachelor of Degree in Education from the University of Transkei.
From 2005 – 2012, Sr Makoro served as a SACBC Associate Secretary-General, prior to her appointment as SACBC Secretary-General.
In 2014, in addition to her existing responsibilities, she was appointed by Pope Francis to serve on the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors (PCPM), of which she was reappointed to a second term by the pontiff in 2018, and she joined the Working Group for the Education of Families and Communities on the issues of Protection of Minors and the Vulnerable.
Sr. Makoro currently serves on the board of directors for the Catholic Health Care Association (CATHCA). Sr. Makoro ministered to Winnie Mandela before her passing.
