Cardinal Stephen Brislin, President of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC), has issued a statement on behalf of the Catholic Church in Southern Africa following the severe flooding in Mthatha and surrounding areas.
Quoting the words of Jesus in John 20:19, “Peace be with you,” Cardinal Brislin extended spiritual closeness to Bishop Sithembele Anton Sipuka of Mthatha Diocese and to all those impacted by the floods. He offered prayers for those who have lost loved ones and acknowledged the displacement and material loss experienced by many families.
Cardinal Brislin affirmed the efforts of the government, civil society organisations, and emergency services in providing relief. He encouraged Catholics within the SACBC region, and people of goodwill, to support these initiatives, stating:
“The Eucharist commits us to the poor (CCC 1397). We are called to become a Samaritan Church that accompanies, assists, and uplifts those affected.”
Cardinal Brislin invited the faithful to contribute to the response coordinated through Caritas Mthatha, offering material and financial support to assist recovery efforts.
As of June 27, the official death toll from the floods in the Eastern Cape had risen to 101, including 38 children, with others still missing, according to reports from AP News approximately 4,000 people have been displaced. Widespread infrastructure damage has been recorded, including destruction of homes, schools, and roads.
President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a national state of disaster, and government officials estimate that R5.1 billion will be required for reconstruction and relief operations. Temporary shelters, food distribution, psychological services, and recovery operations are currently being facilitated across the province. Search efforts continue in affected areas, with aerial and canine support teams deployed.
In a separate statement, Bishop Thulani Victor Mbuyisa CMM of the Diocese of Kokstad, through Caritas Kokstad, appealed for contributions to assist flood victims in Mthatha and surrounding regions. He invited donations in the form of non-perishable food, clothing, blankets, and other essentials, to be coordinated through Parish Caritas structures or Parish Pastoral Councils (PPCs).
“I know that many of us are also facing hardship. For this reason, I am grateful for every contribution made. Your prayers and support are appreciated as we work together to respond,” said Bishop Mbuyisa.
