SACBC Justice and Peace Commission has been working with other civil society organizations, under the umbrella of Defend Democracy Campaign, making sure that the electoral reforms meet the constitutional muster and the need for greater accountability of elected representatives to the citizens.
At the beginning of November, SACBC Justice and Peace was one of the signatories to the submission on the electoral amendment bill that was made to National Council of Provinces (See the attached submission). The National Council of Provinces is set to refer the Bill back to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs after proposing more changes. The bill, which has to be signed into law by 10 December as per the June ruling of the Constitutional Court, will also have to be voted and adopted by the National Assembly yet again after dealing with the NCOP amendments.
