After six years of outstanding service as the SACBC Coordinating Secretary in the Department for Formation, Life and Apostolate of the Laity, Fr Sakhie Simon Mofokeng has been reassigned back to his diocese of Bethlehem in the Free State.
Fr Nkosingiphile Cyril Ngubane CMM, known as Fr Skhumbuzo, a member of Congregation of the Missionaries of Mariannhill (CMM), has been appointed to taken over the role played by his predecessor, since the beginning of June 2020.
Fr Ngubane was born in Ixopo and belonged to Mariathal Mission, but in the late 1980s his family moved to Pietermaritzburg. He joined CMMs in 1996 from his new parish of St Augustine (Machibisa) in Pietermaritzburg, in the Archdiocese of Durban.
He did his first profession as a Mariannhill Missionary in 1998, then advanced to St Joseph’s Theological Institute in Cedara in KwaZulu Natal, where he acquired his Diploma in Philosophical Studies in 1999, and immediately advanced to Bachelor of Theology which he completed in 2003. During the same year he was admitted for his final profession and became the full member of the congregation.
On the 26th June 2004 Fr Ngubane was ordained to the Order of Priesthood at Joseph Cathedral of Mariannhill. After his ordination he was assigned to work as an Assistant priest at Mariann Ridge. In 2005 he was assigned to continue as an Assistant priest at St Michael’s Mission in the Mariannhill Diocese.
From 2006 – 2009 he was assigned to manage a project of the congregation as a Parish Priest at Emmaus Mission in the diocese of UMzimkhulu, and later he was given a new obedience to work as the Parish Priest of St Andrew Mission in the same diocese, simultaneously bearing the position of diocesan youth and school chaplain.
After completing his mission at St Andrew Mission he was transferred to St Joseph’s Mission in Richmond in the Mariannhill Diocese, where he worked as a Parish Priest from 2016-2020, from there he joined Southern African Catholic Bishop’s Conference (SACBC) as the Coordinating Secretary for Laity Department.
The mandate of the Department for Formation, Life and Apostolate of the Laity is to serve SACBC local dioceses by; strengthening communion between the laity and the hierarchy, committed to the implementation of the vision of the Conference as promoted by the Council for Evangelisation and other magisterial documents.
The department also is entrusted with the responsibility of initiating and implementing programmes for the ongoing formation of the laity, as envisaged by the teachings of Vatican Council II and other subsequent Church documents. In the processes it has to ensure that it promotes the participation of the laity in the life of the Church, giving attention to all, professional and lay. It also coordinates SACBC Sodalities, Associations and Movements of the Laity.
