PRESS STATEMENT FROM THE SOUTH AFRICAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS’ CONFERENCE (SACBC) ON THE PASSING OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS
Date: 21 April 2025
With deep sorrow and profound gratitude, the South African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC) joins the universal Church in mourning the peaceful passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis, who died this morning.
Pope Francis was a shepherd of immense humility, courage, and compassion. His voice advocating for the poor, peace, and justice resonated in every corner of the globe, including here in South Africa.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the College of Cardinals, the faithful worldwide, and all who drew strength from his leadership.
We especially remember the many South Africans who found hope and inspiration in his message of joy and mercy.
We ask all the faithful across Southern Africa to pray for Pope Francis and entrust his soul to God’s infinite mercy.
During this transition, we also call on all Catholics and people of goodwill to pray for the Church, the College of Cardinals who will gather to discern a new successor to the See of Peter, and a spirit of unity and peace to prevail.
In due course, we will share details about communal prayer and participation opportunities across our dioceses.
Rest in peace, Papa. Thank you for your faithful witness.
