Pope Francis Remembered as Humble Disciple and Voice for the Marginalized

24 Apr, 2025

The Southern African Catholic Bishops Conference (SACBC) has released a heartfelt statement mourning the passing of Pope Francis, who died peacefully on Easter Monday.

In the Wednesday, April 23 statement, Bishops in Botswana, Eswatini, and South Africa praised the late pontiff as a humble disciple of Christ, whose life and papacy were marked by deep spirituality, compassion, and a commitment to justice.

Pope Francis, the statement says, was more than a global religious leader—he was a man who embodied the teachings of Jesus, living simply and serving from the margins. His final public message, calling for peace just a day before his death, reflected the core of his ministry.

Throughout his papacy, Francis championed the poor, the displaced, and the forgotten. He was known for his powerful gestures—washing the feet of refugees, sitting with prisoners, and challenging world leaders—always choosing humility over prestige.

A key theme of his leadership was promoting a Listening Church, or Synodal Church, where compassion and dialogue took precedence over judgment. He believed that true listening leads to healing and inclusion.

The SACBC also highlighted Pope Francis’s special bond with Africa, noting his visits to the continent and vocal advocacy for the dignity and rights of the Global South. He stood firmly against economic injustice and environmental degradation, consistently urging care for the planet and its people.

As he neared the end of his life, Pope Francis remained steadfast—his health weakened, but his voice strong. The SACBC called on all Catholics to emulate his courage, perseverance, and unwavering faith.

In closing, Cardinal Stephen Brislin, SACBC President, commended Pope Francis to God, urging the Church to continue his mission of peace, mercy, and simplicity. “May his soul rest in the peace he so passionately pursued,” the statement read.
