People may not be in physical exile, living in their own country, but still be very far from God. This type of separation from God is a spiritual exile or death and it is only the spirit of God that can deliver one from such an exile or death.

“Give me justice, O God, and plead my cause against a nation that is faithless. From the deceitful and cunning rescue me, for you, O God, are my strength.” (Cf. Ps 42:1-2)
