COHERENCE or CONVENIENCE?
SA’s Foreign Policy and the Invasion of Ukraine

South Africa’s refusal to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine has been widely criticised, at home and abroad. The government argues that the situation should be addressed through mediation and negotiation, and that condemning Russia would be one-sided and serve no purpose.

Does this stance offer a viable avenue for resolving the conflict, or is it merely a consequence of the governing party’s historical loyalty to the former Soviet Union and its lingering antipathy to the West?

That will be the discussion on the Catholic Parliamentary Liaison Office Webinar on the afternoon of Tuesday 15 March 2022.

Speakers: Prof Peter Vale, Senior Fellow, Public Affairs Research Institute (PARI) & Emeritus Professor
of Politics, Rhodes University and Rev Edwin Arrison, Development Officer, Desmond and Leah Tutu
