South Africa’s refusal to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine has been widely criticised, at home and abroad. The government argues that the situation should be addressed through mediation and negotiation, and that condemning Russia would be one-sided and serve no purpose.
Does this stance offer a viable avenue for resolving the conflict, or is it merely a consequence of the governing party’s historical loyalty to the former Soviet Union and its lingering antipathy to the West?
