The Apostolic Nuncio to Southern Africa in his address to members of the Southern African Catholic Bishops Conference (SACBC), highlighted the importance of synodality as a spiritual renewal and a call to unity, participation, and mission in the Church.

“Our gathering here at Khanya House,” said Archbishop Henryk Mieczysław Jagodziński “is a moment of grace, reflection, and renewal as we deepen our understanding and practice of synodality in the Church.”

He said, “This theme, so dear to the heart of the Holy Father, calls us to walk together as the People of God, listening to one another, discerning together, and journeying forward with a renewed sense of mission and communion.”

In his address to SACBC members gathered at Khanya House for the 21 to 28, 2025 January Plenary session, Archbishop Jagodziński highlighted Synodality as a Core Aspect of the Church that is “deeply rooted in the Church’s life from its very beginnings.”

“From the early apostolic community to the great Councils of the Church, the practice of coming together to discern the will of God has always been a vital aspect of ecclesial life,” said the Papal representative to Southern Africa.

Reflecting on Pope Francis’ vision for the Church in the third millennium, the Polish-born diplomat said, “Pope Francis reminds us that synodality is the path that God expects of the Church in the third millennium. It is a call to move from a model of mere consultation to a model of shared responsibility and co-responsibility.”

Although the Apostolic Nuncio to Southern Africa acknowledged the challenges of resistance to change, differing opinions, and the “complexities of human relationships,” he highlighted Synodality as an opportunity for renewal, empowerment, and strengthened communion.

He said, “It is precisely in these challenges that we are called to trust in the Holy Spirit.” He continued, “The Spirit is our guide and our advocate, leading us beyond our fears and into a space of creative fidelity to the Gospel.”

“At the same time, synodality offers great opportunities for renewal. It invites us to confront difficult issues with courage and faith. It empowers the laity to participate more fully in the Church’s mission. It also strengthens our sense of communion, both within local dioceses and in the universal Church,” he added.

In conclusion, Archbishop Jagodziński called for a Church that embodies Christ’s closeness and mission, inspired by hope and unity. The Papal representative entrusted the Synodal journey to Christ and to Mary and urged the bishops to inspire their communities with commitment, courage, and love.
