The Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC), through the Office for Formation, Life and Apostolate of the Laity, has invited parishes across Southern Africa to celebrate Laity Day on Sunday, 2 August 2026, the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

The annual celebration, approved by the SACBC following the 2024 Southern African Catholic Council for Laity Annual General Meeting, seeks to recognise and promote the indispensable role of lay men and women in the life and mission of the Church. Celebrating the day at parish level is intended to encourage greater participation by the People of God and affirm the vocation of the lay faithful as co-responsible partners in the Church’s mission.

The Office for Formation, Life and Apostolate of the Laity notes that the celebration should not alter the liturgy of the day. Instead, parishes are encouraged to dedicate the Mass intention and the Prayer of the Faithful to the People of God and, where possible, to share refreshments after Mass to foster fellowship and community.

Under the theme, “Called to be One Body: Walking Together in Faith and Mission,” the celebration reflects the Church’s synodal journey, reminding Catholics that every baptised person has a vital role to play in proclaiming the Gospel and building vibrant parish communities.
